Nothing much to do, and that makes me happy. I need sleep.

I am going to visit up with Brian and his family down in Yipsi this weekend. Rhonda is making up some good home cooking! Right on. Plus, B and I are going to work on RadioFreeDetroit.com. It is a site he has been wanting to do for sometime. A local Detroit Hip Hop/Music info site, I think it might be pretty cool. I know it will be fun. I haven't seen him for a while, it wil be nice to catch up.

So, I figured out how to fund my new purchases of useless gadgetry. I am selling all my old CDs and DVDs. Brilliant! So, I am now the proud owner of an iHome iPod alarm clock thing. For about 1/3 of the price. Nice.

So, how've ya been?

Wow. It's been a little while hasn't it? Nothing major going on, just in those little ruts that you find yourself in from time to time. Life getting in the way and such.

Don't you love when you revisit a film, a book, or an artist and the experience is so much better? Like noticing the delicate and deliberate contrasting in an Ansel Adams photograph, or the great performace of Sinatra in "Some Came Running." I had this happen last night. I was listening to the iPod and dozed off for a bit. When I came too I was right in the middle of "Slow like Honey" from Fiona Apple's Tidal. Maybe the sexiest song EVER recorded... yeah, the sexiest song ever recorded by leaps.

Anyway, I noticed how much emotion was there, that I had not noticed all the times I had heard this song before. So I started the album from the beginning and listened all the way through. It was dark. Not in an evil or sinister way, but dark in the hushed whispers of lovers way. Sexy. The whole album was sexy. Well, I probably knew this already. But this time I noticed it for what it was. I love when this kind of thing happens.

My recomendations:

Music:
Fiona Apple - Tidal - At 19, she had more to say about life and love than most people live in a life time. Amazing.

TV:
Love Monkey - Short lived, only three episodes. We barely knew you. CBS=idiots. What is it with networks not giving shows a chance?

Cinema:
Lost in Translation - I can watch this movie over and over and over... you get the point.

Net:
last.fm - This is a social music bookmarking thing... or something. It is cool. My Profile.

Software:
FileChute - Ever had to mail a big file and it was bounced? Your savior is here for $15.

Gadget:
iHome - Can I have one, please?

Rainy days and Mondays...

It has been a rather nice Monday off from work. I slept in, which is ALWAYS great and until now have been watching FoodTV. I simply LOVE cooking shows, always have since Justin Wilson, the Frugle Gourmet, and Julia Child from PBS in the 1970's and 1980's.

The new shows are sexier for sure, but some of them lack a certain passion. When you saw Mr. Wilson pour the wine, you knew he was not just being a character for TV, this is how he would have done it with his family. Not the same with some of the new TV chefs.

But, who am I to critise right? I still take notes and after a good 2 hours in front of the TV, I too can make fritattas with goat cheese, and garnish it with my own guachamole and homemade chips!

Same thing with home improvement shows. I am a genius for a maximum of 8 1/2 minutes post viewing period, then I am afraid what ever magic that was shared with me has vanished. Oh well, what a ride.

What music do you like when you cook? I perfer Jazz. There is something about jazz and cooking with a glass of wine that is SOOO enjoyable. It is like a good beer at your favorite pizza place, or that great coffee shop with a great book. The whole experience is not the sum of it's elements, it is more. Does that make sense?

So, gimme a nice glass of red and some Miles or Coltrane and let me live my 7-8 minutes of bliss before I realize that I am not Justin Wilson or Mario Batali or Alton Brown. I am OK with that. Mostly.

Let them eat cake drink beer...

Scott, Amanda, Leigh, Brad, Chris, and Janelle at Baille Corchaigh. I am still alive, more or less. Life seems to take you away from things from time to time. Work is like work, and home is like work. I feel that I am working too hard, maybe another holiday? I have had time to enjoy some things...

Music:
[iTunes]The Rockfords are the epitome of Seattle "Goodness." Some will get that pun. I simply dig this sound that made Seattle cool in the 1990's. I am sure you will too. Heh, I used to pine over [iTunes]Carrie Akre from the corner of The Crocodile on Saturday nights. It is a community. Also, check out MacJams. Welcome to your life.

Heh. I woke up this afternoon realizing I am now technically middle aged. I don't feel middle aged, not at all. I don't feel any of the things that I should, in my estimation. I am not mature by any stretch of the imagination. The word fart makes me laugh and any reference to boobs- well I am still 15 in that aspect as well. I still watch cartoons, even though Sponge Bob kind of freaks me out (it is his eyes.) I still like popular music, and I like it most of the time loud.

Even after my kicking and fighting to feel young, I am not. I am not old either, at least I don't think so. But then again, my parents don't seem that old to me either. They are still quite young at heart, and maybe that is what it is. Who knows. I will just enjoy what I am and what I have for now. heh... Then when I can't, I will buy some of that internet Viagra.

Music:
Alanis Morrisette - Jagged Little Pill - I had fogotten how much I liked this album! It was all new and familiar at the same time. I trully enjoy experiences like that. Thank you iTunes.

TV:
The Office - This show is too funny. Characters are great and sometimes almost too uncomfortable to watch, which makes the experience that much more enjoyable. You really should find the UK version and watch it first. You will be happy you did, trust me.

Cinema:
Haven't had much time to hit the theater lately, but I hope to stop by next week for the Chronicles of Narnia with some friends.

Net:
Dafont.com - You like fonts? You will love this site!

Software:
Shiira is my new favorite thing. It is a broswer built on Web Kit, the basis for Safari. It has everything Safari has and lots more. You might also want to check out Flock. A Social Oriented Browser based on Mozilla. Not bad.

Gadget:
Thanks to Em, I received a new iTrip for Christmas. This one connects via the dock connector, which is kind of cool. Sounds pretty OK, not the best, but hey I am broadcasting FM, what do you expect!? It is still cool.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://somecheaptherapy.blogspot.com/2005/12/hi-welcome-to-your-life.html' title='Hi. Set in four chapters, Robot Stories explores humanity's relationships with technology. It was also just a bit "creapy."

Net:
PodSafe Music Network - My new fave playground. Lots of great music from lots of indie musicians and groups. You owe it to yourself to check it out.

Software:
Celtx - I have always wanted to write a screen play or something like it. This is a little software package that will assist me in my endevour. Who knows, maybe I will have a talent, or atleast there may be some additional Farscape fan-fict in the near future. Ever wonder what would happen if Rigel and Chi'an ever got together? I have...

Gadget:
Sony Location Free - This is cool. There is no other words to describe this. Cool is the only one that fits. Check it out.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for:

Music:
Blind Melon, Imogen Heap, Incubus, Coldplay, Goodness, Nirvana, STP, Pearl Jam, PSAPP, Soulcoughing, Willy Porter, Weezer, Cake... and many many more.

TV:
Sci Fi Channel, Alias, Rose McGowan, erm the entire female cast of Charmed, Buffy, Rose McGowan (I know), Charisma Capenter, Neil P. I have found a major flaw in my character. Which I might want to say out loud, struck me pretty hard. Well... honestly, I knew it was there, with all the others. GASP! Others meaning all the ones I know about.

It would seem that I am an elitist. Oh yeah, the worst kind. The kind that has no money, no birthright, and really not much else that I can go on. But, still against adversity, karma, luck or what ever you would call it, I am elitist.

The fact that when I walk into a room, I think I am smarter than anyone else there. Yeah, how messed up is that? I know on some levels I cannot possibly be most intelligent, but still it is there at the core of my being. I actually believe that I have a higher capcity for learning and such.

I am not sure where this came from. Was it the positive reinforcement that my parents gave me when I showed them my pathetic excuse for a soap sculpture in the third grade? I think it was supposed to be a fish, however it turned out to look like a rather large pink blob with an ugly green eyeball. The kind or eye you might find in a Picasso, or a Dali painting.

Also, I am not positive when it started. Maybe it was when I was in the second grade and was tested for the "gifted" program. There I am, a small curly headed seven year old, listening to Mrs. Kanode explain what the gifted program was. I must have gotten distracted, or fell into a boredom trance. I do distinctly remember her saying that anyone passing the test would be attending another school. Not sure in what context, but I remember the fear and the disperation that swept over me when she called my name as one of the "chosen nine" that would be taking the test.

I was totally freaked out. There was NO way in HECK (I was seven, remember?) that I was going to leave all my trusted friends for a new school! NO WAY. Although, in hind site, later that year I was forced to jump out of a second story window into a shrubbery by one of the great friends of mine, who ended up stealing a girlfriend in the sixth grade. He is most likely in prison now, so I do not feel slighted or anything.

I walked into the cafeteria knowing full well what I had to do. I was going to answer every question wrong! Never had a plan been so perfectly conceived, or executed. That may be the first time I felt like I was better than everyone else. Which is sort of funny, if you look past all the pathetic parts.

The odd thing is that I read every question and answered it incorrectly, fully knowing the correct answers.

I panicked halfway through, because logically (for a seven year old,) if I had gotten all the questions wrong, someone will relize the genius of the plan and still force me into the gifted school! I quickly corrected this, by going back through the test and correcting some of the answers at random. Brilliant!

The bad thing is, that is worked. I was thrown back into the average population. Sounds like a prision film...

So, the history of my elitist ways may go back farther than that: my mother tells stories of me correcting the neighbor's grammar. What is a man to do? If I see one I will ask.

History aside, my elistism isn't a bad thing. For one, I tend to be a great conversationalist even though I ramble. Secondly, I read a lot about "stuff," that omnipresent collective noun. Although, having an impressive collection of "Intellectual Stuff" has not helped me out with the ladies. Not one time. I see a flaw in my grand plan.

Thanks for listening, I think this is going to work out after all. BTW, I was really serious about the soap sculpture, hideous.

Pleasures:

Music:
Willy Porter - Guitar god. That is the only way to describe him. Not to mention, clever lyrics and great melodies. Worth your $9.99 at ITMS, TRUST ME.

TV:
Ghost Whisperer - I don't know what this show is about, or even if it is any good. But the trailers for it I notice through out the week are quite good. It has nothing to do with sex, but that is the only thing I think of when I see the trailers. Subliminal Messaging? Oh. It might be Jen Hewitt. Yeah, that has got to be it.

Cinema:
Just Friends - Is it just me or is Ryan Reynolds the funniest man on earth? Yes, he is. Amy Smart is too hot.

Net:
ifilm - It is too much fun. Waste hours of your employer's time, and bandwidth!

Software:
I got nothing.

Gadget:
PSP - Love my PSP. For example, Saving Private Ryan and Wiseguys are are two of the most violent movies ever made in my estimatation. Both scenes that some to mind envolve long knives and that along with the suspense that was built up around those scene send shivers deep into my very being. Call me crazy. However, this film looks to be a little more like Full Metal Jacket: a little more drama involved.

Net:
43 Things - Want to learn to cook? Why the hell are the called lords anyway? Most I have spoken to over the past few days during my search are kind of gross. They chain smoke and tend to twitch a little- must be stressful being a Lord o' the Land. Other than the lack of lord-ness, the apartments I am seeing are quite nasty. There are funny smells that seem "natural" and "un-natural" all at the same time. Also, the floors groan with each footstep, the kitchens are soo small that making Kraft dinner might push you into the undersized living room, the bathrooms are large enough for a man to pee from the hallway and have enough clearance so the stream doesn't hit the door frame. I have seen RV more spacious that some of these flats, but I shall venture on...

Not to even mention the prices that these things are going for! AMAZING! Amazing in the BAD way.

Well, things could be worse. I am sure. Speaking on that subject: I get a phone call at 10:30 this morning, all three of my radio stations are off air. WHAT?! I rush in to find all the audio engines that run the place squealing. Nice, huh? After a couple of hours of rebooting and the like, everything looks "normal." A shit storm of nastiness lately. I hope it gets better.

Music:
Incubus - These doods rock out with an added flavor of funk. It is funny, I still remember spouting off "when I am old"-isms when I was 16 or so to my friends. Not to mention, when my friend Tammy started dating the infamous 36 year old the teases from Bill and me about her "too old for sex" boyfriend. Well, on the cusp, I don't feel old... I hope the week's end finds us all a little rest and relaxation. Maybe with the help of some libation? Heh, I love it when I rhyme. I should try to speak like that more often, but you know... that would be like work and stuff and I cannot be bothered.

It is a JIMMY EAT WORLD kind of day for me. Melancholy and punk. That makes sense for me. Work TOTALLY sucked today. First thing I get into a useless argument with one of my coworkers over some non-issue that we should have both not even worried about. My nerves are a little tweaked as of late and I am not really sure why. Maybe the undue stress at home and work converging? I dunno, I am sure I will figure it out. The second thing, in the process of a rebuild of a RAID array, the new drive that was replacing the failed drive FAILED- Right in the middle of the fu**ing rebuild, can you fu**ing believe that? HOLY CRAP! So, I will be in and out of work, working on this project all weekend. Man... It should take about 14 hours to restore the back up, which will totally hug nuts.

On a good note, I got some expense money this weekend, I think it may finance a little town and out in Greater Metro Detroit. Might be well worth it on a social and emotional level. May have to call a certain someone to help me drink some of the cash I have! heh.

Sorry for the randomness of this post, I just felt like writing. I know, YOU CALL THIS WRITING?! Well, give 10,000 monkeys typewriters and they will eventually write all the great works of Shakespeare. Call me one smart, though lobotomized monkey.

Well, work is again calling me once again. Till next time.

As I sit here...

As I sit here, waiting on my lazy assed friend Jeff, because it is raining and he doesn't want to ride his bike home to jump start his borrowed car, because his car is all broken down, my mind wonders. So, I thought I would blog.

Music:
I recently got into PSAPP.|iTunes Link.| They do this cool folk based electronica thing. I am digging it. You may recognize their sound from Grey's Anatomy, they did the theme song, Cosy in a Rocket|iTunes link.|

TV:
Speaking of Grey's Anatomy, is there anything I don't like about this new sit-dram? I think the characters are developing well, and the cast certainly works. I like it. One of my faves.

Movies:
Ever since I 86'ed my LackLuster Movie Pass, I haven't been the movie buff of my past. But I did get a chance to hit the $1.50 rerun movie theater this weekend. What a deal! A few bits and I get a decent film in a decent theater with popcorn and a soda. This I can get used to. All I have to do is force myself away from the theaters to see Serentity and forgo the "Torrent download" thing long enough for it to get to the $1.50 movie-plex! That may not happen.

Books:
Sharon Shinn is a writing godess! When I need a great story to escape for a little while, she has never let me down! Her superb detail and imaginitive characters are simply wonderful. Current book of love is Angelica.

Net:
Interesting article of the moment comes from Wikipedia. I want a new iMac. How cool are they? Did you see it? No? Try HERE. Things that were discussed in the little big event:

New iMac

Built in iSight Camera

Front Row - Can you say Windows Media Center but cooler?

17 inch - $1299

20 inch - $1699

New iPod

larger screen

video capability

16:9, 2.5 inch, 320x240 with support for mp4 and H.264

30GB will be US$299 and 60GB US$399

All models also now come in black.

iTunes 6

iTunes video store. Over 2,000 music videos, for US$1.99 each.
New “Gifts” function, where users can send others songs, videos, and playlists.
Videos will be protected using FairPlay. Vids can be played on up to 5 computers and unlimited iPods, but can not be burned.

TV Shows, Music Videos, and Pixar Shorts available for purchase at $1.99 per episode/video.

Enough about that...

So, I was catching up on my blog reading and I came across a couple of sites that are just too cool. The first one is Pandora. How cool... you tell the engine an artist or song you like and it creates a tiny station with music that is scientifically similar to it. The cool thing about this is that it doesn't use a recommendation stratagy like so many music sites- i.e., others who liked that song liked this song as well. Instead, it uses the Music Genome Project and recommends based on tonality, rhythmic variations and the like. Pretty cool. This site comes from Wil Weaton's blog which has been moved to Typepad (wilwheaton.typepad.com) whilst he handles a nasty database what not.

The second site of note, I have known about it seems like forever and use absent mindedly almost everyday for all those imponderables (is that a word? Heh, must be.) Wikipedia is a HUGE wiki that seems to span every subject known to man. It is quite amazing. Check it out. Last night I read articles about palace intrigue in first century China, and we thought Clinton was bad? He is an amatuer, and not the good kind you can find in your spam folder either! Thanks to Brunt-Blatt for the reminder of how important of a site this is.

Oh yeah, one more site....

HowStuffWorks is one of my favortie sites. It gives you a real person article on how stuff works. Although you are probably very honest and ethical, this birthday enables you to be shrewd and successful in the world of business and commercial enterprise. You have excellent organizational, managerial, and administrative capabilities enabling you to handle large projects and significant amounts of money with relative ease. You are ambitious and highly goal-oriented, although you may be better at starting projects than you are at finishing them. Seems like maybe a week ago I was so nervous about moving to Detroit, with all the bad press and general gloom about the place. Most of it, not so true. Some of it, understatement.

Detroit, it is a strange city. One that really doesn't know itself so well. It is as racially and culturally diverse as any place I have been before, but it severs all those wonderful experiences by segragation. Not everywhere, nor with everyone. But, it is large enough that normal people cannot enjoy this diversity without an invitation. Why is that?

Well, that isn't for me to answer. I am still very much an outsider here. I don't quite fit in. I don't get tweaked about "up north," and I certainly do not know where my loyaties lie on the question of Maze and Blue, or Green and White. Which undoubtedly, is very important.

Up North, is meaning anywhere north of Flint or something... the wilderness. Yeah... I grew up in West Virginia. I have had wilderness until I cannot stand it. Give me a sidewalk! It is a little known fact that I may have mentioned a few times, West Virginia is the single largest importer of mud and dirt products in the world. True enough.

Well, enough about my adolensence in Motown. I will find my legs, I am sure of it. I have lived a number of different places, and this one is as nice as any other.

Oh yeah. I have dicided something. I want to be rich. Not like Bill Gates rich by any means. I just want to stop worrying about money. So, if anyone can help, let me know.

Adios for now.

FINALLY!

Finally, Alias has a plot again! Why is gas so expensive? Why isn't my marraige working out? Why to people that drive big assed SUV's piss me off so much? Why can't I make a decent french toast?

I would seem to me that questions like this are sometimes part of the problem. Maybe not THE problem, but a problem, maybe. I know this is a stretch, but work with me here. My thinking is that by centering our thoughts on the why, sometimes distracts from the task. No? I know my theory doesn't hold water, but then again... who cares?! It is my theory and I thought it up all by myself. The act is stronger than the result and what not.

I can't believe I got a whole paragraph out of that shit. Heh, the beauty of being self involved.

I watched this wonderful documentary about this young Afgan girl whose face was horribly burned by a kerosene lamp. Doctors and people from all over came together to create a new face for this girl. It was very touching, and a nice heart warming story to counterpoint my new found cynicism for the world and everyone in it.

I think I get too much news from the world around me. Information overload? There is a whole nasty world out there, and I do not need to know about all of it's nastyness. I am thinking about revisiting life as a 9 year old. Remember that? I may start living as an isolationist. Is that a word? If not, dibs!

Sorry for my random-ness. I am feeling all fickle. Things that have been occupying my time:

TV:

Liking the new line up, more or less. Why do all the new SCI FI series on TV have something to do with the ocean? Is there some sort of club in Hollywood in which all the writers get together and decide the theme of competition for the season? I dunno. Shows I am digging include:

1. How I Met Your Mother - The New Friends, but cooler.
2. Threshold - Almost as cool as XFILES.
3. House - Hugh Laurie is brilliant.
4. Grey's Anatomy - Sandra Oh, is OH so hot.
5. Medium - I dunno. I just like it.

Music:

I am revisiting the last year of my hyper addiction to ITMS. Dashboard Confessional is my new favorite band; along with Cold Play I am getting my melancholy groove on.

I have recently listened to my Weezer collection in chronological order. Very cool. Rolling Stone missed something in Pinkerton, F 'ing brilliant!

Movies:

British gangster movies are so sweet! Two un related films you should check out:

1. Layer Cake - Sopranos in England.
2. Intermission - One of those cool many stories, many characters all related kind of films. It is cool.

Things are looking up and I need to keep moving forward. Heh, having that pasta that Nell promised me tonight. NICE!

OMG! Where have I been?!

I am not sure. Although, my life did get a little out of control there for a little while.

Shortly after my vacation, my sister-in-law's mother passed away. You know, that is too kind to say it that way. She was murdered; cowardly killed by a psychopath ex-boyfriend. A lovely, kind woman was taken from her family. It sickens me.

Nothing of this sort has EVER happened to a close friend, or member of my family. I wasn't sure of how to feel about it. I was freaked out when I let my thoughts run their course, but I kept in sight the fact that sure this kind of thing could happen to anyone, but in reality is doesn't. I am terribly sorry that such a thing could happen.

Further down my downward spiral, things are a little uncomfortable at home. Things with the misses not going too well. I feel that I have done everything I can do to make my marriage work. I am not sure she even knows what she wants from me.

My downward spiral stops there. Not because that is the natural way of things. It is because I don't want this for me anymore. As cynical as I can be, my thinking on this matter is disturbingly optomistic.

We cannot control everything about our lives, but we can control how we respond. How we win and how we lose. That is the sweetness.

Wow, I need to watch some red vs blue and cheer up a bit. I have been visiting the Apple Store for the last two weeks awaiting my obsession buy of a Might Mouse, to no avail.

"...We had them yesterday, try back on Tuesday..." or

"...if you would have been here an hour ago, we had a couple left..."

So, strategically, I had my wife take employment at the L'occataine Store above the Apple Store at the mall, so she might spy on them to take notes of delivery dates, Genius Bar frequenters and the like to piece together this evil conspiracy.

Well... not really, and I am bored witht he Cloak and Dagger turn this post is taking.

Thanks to my lovely wife for knowing someone at the Apple Store and being able to grab on of these off the shelf shortly after arrivial. I am going to West Virginia.

Yes, the place that spurred a ton of toothless dim-witted jokes and the famous last words, "Watch this... here, hold my beer." Those words are usually followed by confused, nay, bewildered looks and nervous glances by on lookers, and the occasional gun shot or loud explosion. You get used to it, and sometimes can even muster a chuckle.

But, nevertheless, I call it home. I love it there. The people are kind, generous, funny and generally better educated than most places I have lived. There is a sense of belonging there that you do not get other places. There is a certain pride about being West Virginian, and I guess the closest thing to that is the pride that Texans feel about Texas. The same thing applies, except we take WAY more crap about our state.

My mom and dad are living there once again, to be close to their grand children. Aiden, which is the newest family member is but a short 5 minute drive away, though I am sure that mom and dad would like to be closer to the other three Austin, Cameron and the ROBBY-MIESTER, but still only a couple hours away.

My sister and brother also have their families there; I am the only "outsider." Maybe I will have to correct that sometime in the future.

So, I am off for a nice drive down to the Mountain State for a lovely weekend of relaxing and visiting the family.

I will photoblog some pics while I am there for a little added drama. Almost all kinds, except the really weird horror movies, I can't do them.

The two in particular are Trauma (Colin Firth, Mena Suvari) and Guess Who... (Bernie Mac, Ashton Kutcher.) Although, either movie is an Oscar hopefull, they are not terrible films.

In Trauma I feel Colin firth puts forth a great effort as a loser that wakes from a coma to find his wife has been killed and he may be responsible for the disapearance of a super star. Suvari's performance was a little dull. She plays the psuedo love interest. Not a great performance, but she is hot and I can let it slide. Not bad, worth a Saturday night this winter.

Am I the only guy that likes Ashton Krutcher? I loved this movie because I love Bernie Mac, who doesn't?! The plot line was reminiscent of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". In the original, young white girl brings a black man home to meet her parents. It starred Katharine Houghton and Sidney Poitier, and I believe Spencer Tracy... Maybe. The new "version" swaps the tables, where a young black woman brings home her white boy friend to meet the family. I liked it. Not a GREAT film, but cute in it's own right.

Adios.

Insanity...

There are stations in life. Not the type that server gas, or really bad eightie's music, but stations of being. My station of being is the misunderstood guy friend. You know the type, all the great stories of love and romantic comedies are about me. Or at the least someone in my station. See how well that works out?

To disect him lets start at the top: his head.

Don't want to spend too much time in there. Bits and pieces of star trek trival including a few word of Klingon set nestled by deep seeded memories of Jessica Morris's metal rimmed smile in eigth grade, wow she was pretty. He is witty, knows a lot about music, film, too much about TV, and keeps up with current events, just in case. Sometimes a little crazy to friends and always shy around the ladies, except when there is NO CHANCE the girl would EVER be interested in him. Then he has them right in his hands, but never really notices. Sound like anyone?

Not an ugly guy, but not really good looking either. Kind of an everyman with all the blemishes and scars that come from backyard football, beer and pizza with you and yours. He has a kind face and smiles a lot, even when there isn't much to smile over. He will tell you his life story if you will listen, and never really thinks you will judge him. Because think what you will, he doesn't trust everyone but on the same hand, doesn't really care what you think of him either. It is an honest two edged blade to be in that circle.

The rest of his body shows all the signs of the onset of age. Maybe athletic once, he has now gotten a bit squishy about the edges. It isn't because he doesn't care about his apprearance, he doesn't mind it. There is a line there, be careful not to cross it. :) He is comfortable who he is, except around women. Then; quite uncomfortable.

This is me, I think. More or less.

I know it doesn't make much sense, and it rambles. I needed this exercise to keep me from this post's title... later.

consistency.

This is like the tenth or eleventh lifecycle of what used to be known as madebyaliens... I can't seem to keep it going for more than a few weeks at a time. 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off, do not make a blog, I am fairly sure.

So, I am turning a new leaf. I will update the blog at least every two days, if only a, "Hello, I am still alive" post. Well, this, this and this will explain a bit.

You see, there is somewhat of a revolution afoot in radio broadcasting now a days, it is called IBOC, or in it's consumer friendly face, HDRadio.

HDRadio is a method of broadcasting a digital signal along with the regular AM and FM analog signals. The digital part of this can be almost anything you could possibly want in the realm of data casting: audio, video (maybe), all kinds of data types... news, weather, traffic, Dan Brown's latest novel for your passenger's reading enjoyment. The possiblities are almost limitless. Quite cool, I have to say.

Did I mention that you can have more than one "channel" of audio in your digital broadcast?

Can we say an all arabic language news channel on a secondary channel to our classic rock station? How about a little hip-hop on the second channel of your favorite country station? The possibilities are there. Nifty.

Anyway, I was heavily envolved in making this happen at my job, not an overly easy thing by any means, and it isn't finished. But, we are broadcasting an urban/rock station, an easy listening station, and a b-side to your favorite classic rock tune station on the secondary channels of our three FM stations. You can listen to them online too, take a listen to the HIFI webcast, it is freaking nice.

Stop by for a visit.

Weather or not...

I know this is a cop out post, but I really have nothing else in which to write today, so here it is, the conversational post about weather in Michigan.

My first warning would be just say no to Michigan. I know this state has lots to offer, but alas weather, strike that, GOOD weather, it does not.

The winters are horrid, and the summers lack a certain something... oh yeah, sun. I remember when I was a kid growing up in West Virginia, there would be weeks of sunny weather. Not overly hot, but water balloon battles or the occasional dip in the creek were mostly welcomed.

It is odd... I have been having these VIVID flashbacks to Bluewell, WV, my hometown. It is a little burg near the southern border with Virginia, not much to the outside, but did I and my lil' brother have some fun there!

There were lot's of other kids in the neighborhood, some good, some not so good. My brother and I, I would put in the good category, although, I am sure some neighbors would disagree.

Anyway, I have been having these memories, that I haven't thought of in a very long time, some I didn't even know existed. I will write about them soon. But now, lunch is over and I am off to the exciting world of broadcast radio engineering. Oh, boy! Bye.

Ambition: Mediocrity.

Someone asked me recently if I would settle for mediocrity. I know the question was rhetorical and was meant to get me cheering for the corporate team! But, I thought about it and the notion caught be as odd. I didn't really know what mediocrity was. I assumed it was something bad. No one wants to be mediocre. Not me anyway, I am better than that, yeah?!

I opened the dictionary and leafed through to the m's. There happen to be two definitions of mediocrity that stick out:

1.) ordinariness as a consequence of being average and not outstanding
2.) a person of second-rate ability or value

I assume one came from the true meaning, and the other came from sales consultants looking for more catch phrases to inspire the sales force of tomorrow to new unfound capitalistic heights.

I would attach the tag of second-rate to maybe shoes, or a pair of jeans made in Singapore, not to a person. How horrible, informing a person, who may be good at something but not GREAT they are second-rate.

Being average, is not a bad thing. It is being human, I believe.

Woody Allen is a great example of mediocrity. He is an average movie maker in my estimation. Nothing spectacular about a Woody Allen movie as they are slow, winding, and worse- have Woody star in them. Woody Allen is a mediocre actor. There I said it. It is out there now, naked and on the floor. What would make so many say that Woody Allen films better than average? The fact is that most of Woody Allen's movies wallow in the fact that they are mediocre, and Allen often says as much. The movie industry was the victim of a vicious head fake. Bravo.

I am not a great man to any one I do not know, and many I know. Sometimes I am not even a good man, but I keep trying. It is the only way to stay average.

So to further define mediocrity: Ordinary; the expected or commonplace condition or situation.

Commonplace. Now there is a word I can live with. Common, an every-man. I like it. Order up the cards. So with that, will you please ask the question again...

Would I settle for mediocrity? I dunno. I will think about it. You remember the quirky movie starring Bill Murray, where his character gets stuck in time reliving the same day over and over again?

Eh, that is me. The exception being instead of one day, it turns out that fate finds me repeating weeks at a time.

I go to work, come home, there are lunches and dinners and bad movies and some good conversations thrown in between. But mostly, I repeat the same things over again from week to week.

My daily grind starts at 8:00AM, or 9:00AM depending on whether I set the alarm the night before. A shower, followed by dental hygiene, on to a quick check of the news online and then a check of the clock will most likely show that I am late for work. I scurry about looking for a shred of clothing and then I am out the door!

Driving to work is probably the only wild card that I have in my day, maybe lunch too, but that is a whole story in itself. The commute, that dreaded hydra of our unwavering pursuit of commerce and riches. We must get to where we are going.

BTW, Who thought it was a good idea to everyone to have their own car? The carriage should have stayed a plaything for the wealthy and should have NEVER been brought to the common man.

I mostly leave late enough that the traffic isn't so bad, and I am into my part of the city pretty quickly. Oh, but those ill fated days, where someone driving a twenty ton Sherman-Tank-C-130-cargo-transport-frieght-train of an SUV thought it prudent to change twenty five lanes of traffic because they were making the deal of the century with Luanne from accounting on their cell phone while reading the Free Press and trying to choke down a banana-nut muffin and their venti caramel machiato from Starbucks and almost missed their exit, then collides with another human in another overpriced, overrated SUV of the same ilk, mostly likely doing something very similar, trully make working in Detroit a horrible experience.

Once that battle is over, the new ones begin.

I sit down in my office sift through the email making sure all my CYA traps still sit un-triggered, knowing full well if there is a problem, I shall spring to action to control it with the right amount of spin so the parties concerned walk away slightly dizzy but unaware they have been the victim of synergy and paradigm shifts in the corporate force. I am getting better at office politics, though I never wanted to play that corporate sport. Barring any nastiness in the email territory, I trek off to the kitchen to make sure there is no free food, and maybe grab a coffee or soda to "take the edge off."

(I am a food junkie, eat to take the stress away, eat to celebrate no stress, eat because it is Tuesday; I have a wonderful love of food, and always have had from an early age. I will save that for another blog, or twelve.)

After the foraging in the kitchen, I make my way back to my office close out the world, and check the all important punch list. I hate the punch list. I want to punch the punch list. The punch list is basically a list of crap that I have to do before I feel "un-guilty" enough to asked for a raise, or vacation.

That list is filled with little nagging reminders that I am not good at my job, and should be manning the shake machine at McDonalds, or stand in for that sign guy who holds the walkie-talkie and the SLOW/STOP sign for road crews. Not those jobs are bad, but they hold a certain level of thought at bay, which I am thinking is what I need. They have simple choices to make, slow or stop, chocolate or vanilla? I need that kind of simplicity in my life.

There is the snapshot into my life. I may finish it later, and You get the point by now... I am a pretty boring guy, and the only thing that keeps me sane enough to not shower with a toaster is some really great characters written for my supporting roles. Some old friends and some new faces pop in and out from time to time.

Sooo, anyway...

Monday always brings this feeling back to the forefront of my consciences. I wonder why? Is it a wake up call from the cosmos? I doubt it. The cosmos isn't know for it's amenities and hospitality. Although, I here it has a nice pool.

The thing is, I am not a very religious man, but I tend to believe there is something, or someone guiding all of this "stuff" in some order. Things seem to neatly tucked in for there not to be some "higher" being calling the shots. OJ got a way with it for some reason.

My belief in this, minus the orthodoxy behind it (I think we got that part wrong), tells me if I am suffering the plight of one ass of a weatherman, there is good reason, and just like in the movie, I will learn and grow from it into a better human being.

ew... this is cool.

Dashboard blogging.
